Andreas Egger ist stark, aber langsam. Als vierjähriger Waise wird er 1902 auf den Hof des Grossbauern Hubert Kranzstocker gebracht. Er sieht zum ersten Mal die Berge und bekommt den Ochsenziemer des Bauern bei jeder Gelegenheit zu spüren – einmal knackt etwas im Bein, und Egger hinkt. Als 18-Jähriger verlässt er den Hof. Ohne zu murren, arbeitet er als Knecht, hilft beim Bau der ersten Seilbahn im Tal und lernt die Liebe seines Lebens kennen: Marie. Er wird sie verlieren und krank und starr vor Traurigkeit sein, wird ihr im 2. Weltkrieg aus Russland einen Brief schreiben und ihr schliesslich wieder begegnen.
